Making Noise: Rum Jungle

Rum Jungle have had a grand twelve months, with steady and impressive audience growth as well as the biggest Aussie playlists jumping onside. All told, it gives them strong odds of levelling up and up and up.

Tracks released: 5

Playlists appeared on*: 11 – that’s not a massively wide spread among the lists I track, but the ones they’ve featured on are hugely influential, and they’ve featured on them time and again. Bagging regular slots on both New Music AU&NZ (four out of five tracks added) and triple J’s New Music Hitlist (also four out of five added!) is not to be sniffed at. It’s also extremely rare for an artist that’s still growing to see that kind of backing from two of the biggest new music playlists in the country.

Spotify followers**: Twelve months ago, they’d recently broken through the 10k barrier, but today they’re sitting well on the other side of 20k, nearly doubling their following in a year, and growing at an impressively steep (and impressively steady) rate. As audiences hear the tracks, they’re sticking around – listeners are consistently turning into fans.

* I don’t track every single playlist in the whole world because that would be bonkers. The 40 or so that I do track are specifically chosen because they focus on new music by Australian artists – this narrows down the set to a manageable size, showing who’s supporting an artist before any given track has already blown up. Basically, I think it’s a solid dataset to show which artists are getting critic support.

** I tend to use Spotify Followers as the key metric to watch, instead of Monthly Listeners or Popularity. Monthlies are great, but they can be messed up by an artist being a contributor or songwriter on another artist’s track, and (along with Popularity) can fluctuate pretty wildly. Followers implies a conscious choice of preference from a user, so for me is the strongest and steadiest signal of solid, ongoing audience support.
