“Amends’ singer Luke McDonald plays solo tonight, showing the bones of these wonderful songs. The full band version – live or on record – is wide and rich and expansive, a desert shot on 70mm film. Without the band the strength and heart at the core of the music is sharper, not diminished. If you take away the production and the scale of a song and it’s still capable of moving you, you know you’ve done something very right indeed – this whole set is full of moments like that. The full band set gets the pulse racing, but a slowed-down solo version of “This One, For Example, Is About Grief” is enough to make your heart stop dead.”
