Not because it’s a technical marvel but because it’s full-bore J Mascis, breaking with cracks and croaks and going in unexpected directions, a rare thing to hear against a backdrop that isn’t made of fearsome distortion and sound. It’s a strange pleasure to hear something fit and work that, on paper, absolutely shouldn’t.”
