“Paint Hotels is playing songs that he claims were designed to be “bigger”, by which (I’m guessing) he means that they would normally involve more than just him and a guitar. This is worrying – if these haunting, hypnotic, wonderful songs were to get any better with more people involved, they’d be monsters. An almost ecclesiastical reverence has gone into this set, Buckley-esque twangs and Yorke levels of plaintiveness. It’s just two elements on stage, but they fuse and burn into something you can’t tear yourself away from. It is quite, quite beautiful.”
