With the festival starting next week, a flood of updates and announcements has left the list of artists playing at SXSW Sydney 2024 sitting – by my count – at 175.
These now include both the latest official list, plus other artists announced by labels and other people putting on their own showcases as part of the festival. You can see my whole list here, but don’t forget the official app is live and you should use that as your primary source.
Based on last year, there will still be some more confirmations to come, but this list should be 75-80% complete.
By Genre
Indie Rock, Pop, and Hip-Hop make up the bulk of the artists playing, with a lot of R&B, and a decent amount of Rock artists also on the lineup. You can filter artists by genre on the dashboard and there’s also an easy-to-read list here too. You can’t search by genre on the app, so this might come in handy if you want to dive into one style.
By Country
Australia and New Zealand artists dominate the lineups, but there’still a lot of acts from around the world. 18 countries are represented overall, with artists jetting in from the UK and the US (the #2 and #4 countries respectively), as well as from Colombia, Canada, India, and even the Cook Islands.
Groups vs Solo Artists
Despite the ongoing narrative that ‘bands are dead’ etc etc, there are still 70 group acts playing this year, 40% of the total. A lot of the solo artists have popped onto the list in the last few weeks, but even if that drops a bit in the final count, there’s still a strong contingent of bands and groups of artists performing this year (which, as you can probably guess, makes me pretty happy).
What to do next
Don’t forget that if this is your first time at SXSW Sydney, planning is essential. However, remember too that a lot of artists will play more than once – if you think you’ve got a clash between two acts you really want to see, make sure you use the app (and prob check their socials too) to check if they’re playing again somewhere else on the schedule.
