Beddy Rays – Better Weather

Joining the ranks of songs-about-COVID, Beddy Rays’ musical exuberance is tempered here by the effects of the pandemic on the mind. They might bounce around like mad’uns on this track (and it’s just as much giddy and goof-around fun as ‘Sobercoaster’) but singer Jacko’s Eeyore-ish, almost mournful vocal notes get the starring role. It’s a track which sounds optimistic, while offering a pin-sharp reflection of the state of things – with lines like “it’s a pretty shit day outside / but it’s perfect weather” they’re holding up a harsh mirror to the world. Muscially, this makes it two-from-two absolute gems from Beddy Rays, but ‘Better Weather’ also adds some depth to their bag of tricks. With form like this, they won’t just be remembered for this glorious slice of pandemic pop, but will be gleefully soundtracking the better times ahead, when the weather is better both outside and in. That, at least, is something to look forward to.
