The Underground Stereo: PJ Orr, Foley!, Melbs BB, Vetty Vials

An occasional roundup of tracks I can’t get enough of, by bands I’ve somehow not got round to seeing live yet.

PJ Orr – Tightrope Walker

“This clever little squirrel takes a few listens but – especially on headphones – it gradually turns into something truly loveable. Adding a layer of Tom Petty’s country wit to Australian guitars, it’s a dusty beaut. Gentle waves lap at its shores, but under the surface there’s a glint of teeth.”

Foley! – It’s A Mess, I’m A Mess

“Like the rest of the immaculately-titled album by Foley! (“Moley!”), this is so much fun it’s hard to shake off. Keeping everything simple pays off in spades, shovelling smiles on top of smiles with every Wedding-Present-y beat. It’s a blister under two and a half minutes long but it creates grins the size of dinner plates.”

Melbs BB – Astrology (Clothesline)

“Melbs BB sure does like astrology (even the video for this features all the star signs at a party) and the music sounds like it’s coming in from somewhere else in the cosmos. Having clearly qualified from the same Space Cadet Academy as Flaming Lips or Lorde, this roils and phases and explodes, etheral one second, seismic the next, an interstellar visitor burning through the atmosphere.”

Vetty Vials – Pride

“Slick and shiny, so smooth it’s like it’s running on rails. This is the sound of rock hair flailing, of hands raising, and of singing along into your hairbrush to the glorious chorus. Hackles, raised.”
