The Underground Stereo: Teen Jesus & The Jean Teasers, Egoism, Loser, The Dusty Rhodes

An occasional roundup of tracks I can’t get enough of, by bands I’ve somehow not got round to seeing live yet.

Teen Jesus & The Jean Teasers – Desk Chair

“With that immaculately bonkers name, it’s perhaps surprising to discover the craftily-tailored songwriting that accompanies it. While this is largely made from the flavours du jour of Australian indie, the lyrics and vocal melodies and phrasing are – improbably – straight out the Belle and Sebastian songbook. It’s whip-smart, it’s mad fun, and it’s utterly fabulous.”

Egoism – You You

“The difference between an average band and a brilliant one is usually the way the songs carry themselves. Some slouch about and are fun enough, but others walk into a room and light it up – this is one of those songs, brimful of class and swagger. While there’s a healthy respect for the 90s independent pop in there, the overall effect is like a bank of shimmering lights coming on in your head, bright and hypnotic enough to send you reeling.”

LOSER – Lazy

“Much is made of this band’s other projects, and of the sense of Foo-Fighterishness that pervades the music. Fair enough – just because you’re in one good band, it’s not guaranteed that you can be in two. Also, pulling off any sort of Foo-Fighterishness without sounding awful is really bloody hard. Thankfully, this is a cracking song, crackling with energy and addictive as all hell. Times like these, it’s a lot easier to not give a damn where they’ve come from, or who they sound like – this stands squarely on its own feet, and requires attention on its own terms.”

The Dusty Rhodes – Heartbreak Jones

“Given that The Dusty Rhodes are named after a wrestler, it’s not a surprise to find it’s all about massively hairy rock n’ roll. The story of murderous bastard Heartbreak Jones is told with relish and glee, with riffs and bellowing, with the sense you’re being yelled at while sitting on the back of a motorcycle travelling at high speed. It thunders and crashes, and is just as satisfying as that sounds.”
