The Underground Stage
Every week I pick out a bunch of interesting shows featuring emerging, DIY, and independent Australian artists. The full list of shows this week are below – those are the ones to get out to in the next few days. Don’t forget, there’s also a futuristic-y dashboard here that lets you look ahead if you […]
“Cutthroat Kelly takes no prisoners, muscular and roiling with big song, a blast of heat and strength. Classic in its rock but snarling it its tone, it’s a glorious set of high-octane fun and sneer.” Gallery Listen
“Tabloid’s rich songwriting works at pace or at leisure, reclining lazily or jumping on the bed. It’s at its best when it puts its foot down, but it’s got superb control when it needs to take a slow corner too.” Gallery
“For Clift’s fondness for the minor-key blank verse of The Smiths blares loudly, but it never turns into pastiche, instead adding tension and torque – a restless energy in the spaces where pure art-student poetry would usually leave dopey gaps. A lovely and wired set, paranoid and twinkly in equal measure.” Gallery Listen
“The Night Packers make superbly-formed 90s-tinged indie rock, where sparkly jangle and savage hooks take their turns. It’s well-read, it’s high fun even in the sadder moments, and it’s clearly got an impeccable vinyl collection – classic pieces polished to a high shine.” Gallery
“Harold & the Bishops are mostly raw teeth and chomp but with added moments of spacey psyche that don’t so much make it sound like they’re jamming as it does imply they’ve snapped the leash entirely. Urgent and shuddering, wild in its truest sense.” Gallery Listen
