Mercury Rev @ Enmore Theatre, 9th Aug

Mercury Rev have always been a band about drama and narrative, and their dark, joyous theatricality is on full display tonight, a dense set of soaring art.

The selection is drawn primarily from ‘Deserter’s Songs‘ and ‘All Is Dream‘, each song painted with thick strokes and physical exuberance, arm-waving and intensity.

Deeper cuts like set-opener ‘The Funny Bird‘ are as glorious out in the open as the bigger guns of ‘Opus 40‘ or a shimmering version of ‘Holes‘, while set closer ‘The Dark Is Rising‘ builds and expands until the air is thick with it.

A set of delicate songs delivered with titanic heft.
