The Pinheads – Pump It Up

If the The Pinheads were Primal Scream, this is the bit where they can do stuff like “Rocks”. It’s a cover of an Elvis Costello track but it’s a huge shift from that where-the-fuck-did-THAT-come-from stage into the part where we all end up dancing to them without realising it’s the same band. The horrorshow keyboards lurk in the background, and the filthy glam stomp is still there in spades – and they still sound like they’re lurking JUST OUTSIDE YOUR WINDOW – but the music is pure Stones-y backbeat shoulder-shaking. It’s never really been clear when The Pinheads were coming from, the loveable weirdos – but it remains a stone cold pleasure to hear where they’re going and what else they’re capable of.
