Making Noise: Forest Claudette

Over the last fortnight, Forest Claudette’s track ‘Kobe Beef’ has been all over the best new music playlists in Australia, the latest in a run of releases over the last year that have gained them staunch critic support and a significant amount of new audience.

Their latest release was also the most well-supported of the last twelve months, appearing on more of the most credible Australian new music lists than previously. It gave them their third appeareance on Triple J’s New Music Hitlist, and a fifth slot on New Music Friday AU & NZ – when you add those heavyweights to spots on a broad sweep of both indie and major playlists, you start to see a remarkably strong swell of tastemaker support.

Since early last year, their audience has been on an impressive climb too – their total number of Spotify followers* has more than tripled in twelve months, now perking above the psychologically important 10k mark, up from just less than 3k a year ago.

Taken together, these look very much like firm foundations for an impressive year ahead.

* I tend to use Spotify Followers as the key metric to watch, instead of Monthly Listeners or Popularity. Monthlies are great, but they can be messed up by an artist being a contributor or songwriter on another artist’s track, and (along with Popularity) can fluctuate pretty wildly. Followers implies a conscious choice of preference from a user, so for me is the strongest and steadiest signal of solid, ongoing audience support.
