Every week, my robots scour the biggest nine New Music Friday playlists in the world to see whose getting backed hard by the big green machine. This week:
π The Champ: Ed Sheeran
While Sam Smith (21m followers) made it two weeks in a row appearing on all nine of the biggest New Music Fridays, he was bigfooted this week by the biggest gorilla in the zoo, Ed Sheeran (108m followers) with his new track “F64“, a tribute to his late friend and the founder of SBTV Jamal Edwards, and which samples a BNXN hook.
π The Challenger: boygenius
The boygenius supergroup (Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus) smashed back into the world this week with “Emily I’m Sorry“, bagging a spot on all of the big nine. A fabulous project from three unbelievable artists, and a beautiful track, all getting the support the work so rightfully deserves.
π₯ Punching Above: mazie
After the viral success of last year’s “Dumb Dumb”, mazie keeps the fires burning with “it’s not me (it’s u)“, bagging spots on 7 out of 9 of the biggest NMFs this week, outpacing some way more established artists, and highlighting the headroom for growth for this brilliantly bonkers artist.
π§ββοΈ New Blood: TYNSKY
Young Polish singer-songwriter TYNSKY broke onto five of the big nine this week, with the delightful “Spotlight“, a hell of an achievement for an artist with less than a few thousand followers, and less than two years of releases in their back pocket.
