The Underground Stereo: Bad Weather, Pting, Two Last Names, Azim Zain & His Lovely Bones

An occasional roundup of tracks I can’t get enough of, by bands I’ve somehow not got round to seeing live yet.

Bad Weather – Teenagers In Love

Swoon. This outrageously fun track is the soundtrack to the best John Hughes film never made. Smart lyrics, an absolute pest of a chorus, and a thrumming sense of urgency throughout… yeah, this is going straight into the ‘songs of the year’ list. It won’t even touch the sides.

Pting – Naps

Writing a song about having naps is completely demented, but in the very sweetest of ways. Lo-fi guitars, the unmistakeable whiff of the ramshackle, and kitchen-sink sentiment in the lyrics – it’s a glorious collapse just waiting to happen, one that warms you up just by being around you.

Two Last Names – Too Young Too Old

Two Last Names are clearly working through some mid-youth angst about the angst of mid-youth. It’s not a new topic, but it’s delivered with sharp observation and snarky humour, not to mention a jaunty, sneery tune. They might be full of existential bleh – but if they’re putting records this sharp together, I think we can be certain they’ll figure it out.

Azim Zain and His Lovely Bones – Holiday Home

Azim Zain & His Lovely Bones – great name – mould this song’s individual elements into complex sculpted form, impressive and intricate, like a cathedral. A wall of voices lift up the chorus, and the whole piece seems like it’s flying.
