Every week, my robots scour the biggest nine New Music Friday playlists in the world to see whose getting backed hard by the big green machine. This week:
π The Champ: Sam Smith
Sam Smith’s “Gimme” appeared on all of the biggest NMFs this week, and was the artist with the largest Spotify following (21m) to do so, making them the biggest animal in the playlist jungle this week.
π The Challenger: ThxSoMch
ThxSoMch’s “CAROLINE” also made it into all of the big nine this week, which for an act with a 110k following is a glorious achievement, and testament to the attention created after their breakthrough “SPIT IN MY FACE!” track in December.
π₯ Punching Above: JoeSef
JoeSef also did brilliantly well, appearing on seven of the largest nine NMFs this week, with “Moment“. For context, that’s the same level of appearances as The Chainsmokers, and for an act with less than 100k followers, it’s a decent signal that this artist is being taken pretty seriously.
π§ββοΈ New Blood: Royel Otis
Finally, the excellent Royel Otis made it onto five of the major NMF lists this week with the barkingly catchy “I Wanna Dance With You“. Those of us here in Oz who’ve been paying attention to the serious support they’ve been getting locally for a while now are delighted to see these Sydney locals getting the wider attention they so richly deserve.
