Until now, Jeremy Neale has, on record, been about as chirpy as it’s possible to be. This new one comes off like it’s bruised, with a couple of teeth missing. While it makes those us familiar with his grinning schtick want to give him an enormous hug, musically this a light-speed increase in maturity and depth. I love this record – even though my loveable hero seems bloodied, it’s still unbowed and superbly literate pop. This is still music that indie punks can dance to, with people they really fancy – but it sounds like it was hard music to make.
